ICE agent shoots man in New York City with child in car

A US immigration officer shot a man as he drove in a car with a five-year-old boy in New York City, officials have said.

The 28-year-old man, who was identified by police as Oscar Belgal, survived the shooting and was treated at a hospital.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not describe exactly what led to the shooting, saying only that "during the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon" and that the man was injured.

The DHS said it was seeking to arrest the man in a "targeted enforcement operation", but protesters and local officials decried it as an example of the dangers of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mr Belgal was pulling into a parking space when a federal officer in plain clothes approached with their gun drawn, followed by another federal officer who also wasn't in uniform.

Mr Belgal started to move forward, and then at least one of the officers fired seven rounds, striking the man below his left ear, Ms Tisch said at a news conference on Thursday.

The child was unharmed and with a relative, she said, noting police weren't involved in the operation but responded after hearing shots.

The DHS said in a statement that it was seeking to arrest a "criminal illegal alien" with a grand larceny conviction and a history of other arrests.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his outrage over the shooting.

"There is no justification for what we have seen today," Mr Mamdani said.

"Early reports indicate agents surrounded (the man) and a five-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds," he said.

He said the federal officers who surrounded the vehicle wore construction vests and masks, making it difficult to identify them as ICE officers.

The mayor, a Democrat, said he had spent two hours pressing Donald Trump and Homeland Security secretary Markwayne Mullin to release Mr Belgal.

He urged them to stop immigration enforcement operations in the city and said that late on Thursday night, federal authorities removed the man from the hospital and took him away.

Governor Kathy Hochul, also a Democrat, said in a statement she had delivered a similar message to Mr Trump and Mr Mullin by phone.

The gunfire sounded at around 4pm local time in Marble Hill, a small area of Manhattan attached to the Bronx.

An NYPD security camera had recorded some of the events in the lead-up, but not the shooting, Ms Tisch said.

At a heated news conference at the scene of the shooting on Thursday night, several local politicians vented their frustration.

"We are heartbroken and enraged," said city council member Carmen De La Rosa, a Democrat who emigrated from the Dominican Republic and represents areas including Marble Hill.

Protesters at the scene chanted, "ICE off our streets now!" and marched to the hospital where the man was being treated.

More clashes at the barricades ensued, and several people were arrested.

A damaged car sat blocking the roadway with small holes in two windows. Ms Tisch said there was a bullet entry point on its front windshield and an exit point in a rear window.

ICE agents have fired their guns during more than a dozen vehicle stops since last year, killing at least four people and wounding others.
