West Ham sack head coach Nuno Espirito Santo after poor start to season

West Ham have sacked head coach Nuno Espirito Santo after the club won just six out of 13 Championship games this season.

The Portuguese manager, who was appointed in September last year, had managed to keep his position despite the team's relegation from the Premier League in May.

However, the Hammers have now removed their head coach, having lost three of their seven home games and sitting eighth in the table, as they seek an immediate return to the top flight.

A club statement read: "West Ham United can confirm that men's first-team head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has left his position with immediate effect.

"Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the board of directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the club's objectives and expectations remain on track."

Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also departed, the club confirmed.

Scott Parker is close to being appointed as Nuno's successor, according to Sky Sports News.

Discussions with Parker, who made 129 appearances for West Ham as a player between 2007 and 2011, are reported to be at an advanced stage.

West Ham said the process of recruiting a new coach was already under way and that Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will take temporary charge of squad preparations ahead of Wednesday evening's Championship fixture at Cardiff City.
