Adelaide is smaller than Sydney and Melbourne, but beautifully formed.

As a perfectly-turned out Edwardian garden city, it has made mercifully few concessions to the skyscraper, preferring low-level grandeur. As the gateway to the Barossa Valley, it’s a town that knows its wine – and every one of its million-plus inhabitants can tell you a thing or two about Wolf Blass, Petaluma and the other world-class wineries within easy reach.

Must See:
The Great Ocean Road from Adelaide to Melbourne is one of the world’s great drives. Plan to do it in three days and stop off at Port Fairy and the legendary 12 Apostles (huge outcrops of rock) and you’ll have memories (and photos) for life.

Must eat at:
For hearty seaside bistro/gastropub food, head to the Grange Hotel on the Esplanade. It’s got fabulous views and the one-time accolade of Best Bistro in Australia.

Must be there for:
In late Spring, Adelaide stages Feast, arguably Australia’s best annual gay and lesbian cultural festival. Feast, (a Galta member) features theatre, concerts, film, exhibitions and, of course, a party or two.

Well-travelled tips:
If you’ve a couple of hours to kill in transit at Changi Airport, pack your trunks and head straight to the transit hotel in Terminal 1 for its unique outdoor pool.
 If it’s shopping you’re after and you don’t have time on your hands – head straight to the Bugis district, for pedestrianised retail heaven.

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia was named in honour of Queen Adelaide. The city was shaped by religious freedom, a commitment to political advancement and civil liberties, all which lead to Adelaide being fondly known as the "City of Churches”.

It is also the gateway to the Barossa Valley, one of the best wine producing areas in Australia. Adelaide is the heart of Australia’s finest food and wine. South Australian’s live with the culture to appreciate good times and in order to celebrate good life, they strive to provide quality food and excellent wine. Despite being smaller than cities like Sydney, Adelaide offers a far more pleasant lifestyle and is proud of it’s reputation for Adelaidean’s to be considered relaxed and easy going.

If you are visiting Adelaide, expect a lively city with a stunning selection of restaurants and cafes and nightlife, however it only has a reasonably small gay scene.
