A man has died after being shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston, Texas.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national it claimed was in the US illegally, had attempted to evade arrest following a vehicle stop and was fired upon by the ICE agent in an act of "self-defence".
Mr Araujo was taken to hospital, where he later died.
A DHS spokesperson said the vehicle stop had been part of a "targeted enforcement operation", adding that Mr Araujo had "rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponised his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer".
They added: "This is a developing situation, and we will update the public when more information is available."
The incident comes as arrests by immigration enforcement have ramped up as the Trump administration pursues its mass deportation agenda. In late June, ICE made more than 10,000 arrests during a five-day period.
The Houston City Council had previously passed a motion limiting ICE co-operation, but later reversed that decision following threats by Texas governor Greg Abbott to cut more than $100m (£75m) in state funding for public safety.
