Fire shuts down Nottingham city centre as residents evacuated from building

Trams have been stopped and roads closed through Nottingham city centre as firefighters battle a blaze at a residential property.

Residents were evacuated from the building as flames and smoke were seen billowing from the roof opposite the Theatre Royal.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) urged people to avoid the area after the fire broke out in Market Street at around 10.30pm on Monday night.

There were 12 fire engines at the scene of the inferno just before 11pm, the NFRS said.

Roads are closed on Upper Parliament Street, Lower Parliament Street, Market Street, King Street and Queen Street, and the Nottingham Tram has been stopped in both directions between Theatre Royal and Market Square.

As a result, diversions for cars and buses have been put in place.

The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed by investigators.

Images showed fire engines parked along the tram tracks and a crane being used in the operation, with the area cordoned off.

An aerial image released by the fire and rescue service appeared to show damage to the roof of the building.

Neighbours have been told to keep doors and windows closed while smoke is still in the air.

Early on Tuesday morning, the NFRS said there were still some crews at the scene, as the transport disruption continues.

A spokesperson said: "Fire service crews remain on scene and are likely to be there for several more hours.

"Road closures and tram disruptions remain in place. Please avoid the area and find alternative routes if possible."

The statement added: "Roads in the area have been opened to one lane only, and we expect heavy traffic disruption this morning; please use alternative routes where possible.

"There have been no reports of any injuries at this stage, and a fire investigation is scheduled to take place later today."
