Girl, 9, killed in crash between car and pick-up truck in the Scottish Highlands

A nine-year-old girl has been killed in a crash in the Scottish Highlands.

The fatal collision - involving a Volkswagen Polo and a Ford Ranger - occurred on the A831 between Drumnadrochit and Cannich at about 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Police Scotland said emergency crews, including an air ambulance, were mobilised after the alarm was raised.

The schoolgirl, who was a rear passenger in the Polo, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and front seat passenger of the car were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment.

Sergeant Kate Finlayson said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the girl who died, and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."

The road was closed for seven hours for investigation works.

Sergeant Finlayson urged anyone who witnessed the crash or the vehicles prior to it to contact police.
