Selling Out! - Ep 2: Cuts, Colour & Confidence | Daniel Lustig & Oliver Blackaby / Selling Out!

Selling Out!

Friday, 16 October 2026 - 1 hour 18 minutes

Selling Out! is the podcast for LGBTQIA+ founders, leaders and creatives. Real conversations about building a life and a career on your own terms, straight jackets not included. 🏳️‍🌈Season 2, Episode 2 is a proper hair special, and yes, we got it cut and coloured in the process. From Saturday boys and glass collectors to Tony & Guy, Gogglebox and two salons of their own, two Brighton hairdressers on why charisma beats talent, why you are the expert in the chair, and what they wish they’d known before opening the doors.Daniel Lustig (he/him, G) was a Hove paperboy, a Faith Shoes salesman at 16 and a trainee hairdresser at Peewees before finding his feet at Tony & Guy. He spent time on Gogglebox, where he was one half of the only gay couple on TV every Friday, and still gets recognised by strangers on Greek islands. Daniel runs Salon Lustig & Webb, a business he started as a pop-up in the back of a kitchen showroom and has now kept going for 13 years.Oliver Blackaby (he/him, GQ) grew up in Poynings, was a glass collector at The Event (yes, that one) and made his Barbie a replica of Sarah Ferguson’s wedding dress. He took a fashion degree, worked for French Connection, then found his tribe and his calling behind the chair at Stage One in 1998. He opened his own salon, The Hair Salon in Brighton & Hove, just as Brighton came out of lockdown. Oliver also co-hosts The So Lovely Talk Show with Siobhan Jones and runs a hairdressing education platform.Together they cover 30-odd years of hairdressing, from the Tony & Guy twelve-haircut era and salon uniforms that left no room for identity to today’s AI-armed clients arriving with impossible Pinterest boards. They talk about what it means to be queer in an industry people assume is run by queer people (it isn’t always), what representation on screen really did for young viewers, and why putting up a Pride flag in Brighton now comes with a flicker of anxiety. It’s also an honest masterclass for any creative thinking of going it alone: know your numbers, hold your consultation, and remember that you are the talent.“It’s a bit like you can pass your driving test in six months. It doesn’t mean you can drive.”🎙️ Sponsored by Legends Brighton: legendsresortbrighton.com, and Mortgage Medics: mortgage-medics.comVideo & Audio by Always Cinematic: AlwaysCinematic.comPowered by GoSucceed® GoSucceed.co.ukKeywords / Tags: LGBTQIA+, queer business, hairdressing, salon owner, Gogglebox, representation, Pride, Brighton, creative industries, business advice, imposter syndrome, social media, AI, podcast, Selling Out, GoSucceed®Season: 2 | Episode: 2Selling Out! is the podcast for LGBTQIA+ founders, leaders and creatives.
