Florida airport renamed President Donald J Trump International Airport

An airport in South Florida has officially been renamed after Donald Trump - the first time an airport has been named after a sitting US president.

From Thursday, Palm Beach International Airport will be called President Donald J Trump International Airport, with new signs installed as part of the change.

In a post on social media, airport officials said the rebranding would continue over "several weeks", while the three-letter airport code will change from PBI to DJT on 18 August.

Writing on Truth Social, the US president said it was a "great honour" and promised that the "renovation will be spectacular".

He said: "A very big day in Palm Beach, Florida, where it was my Great Honor to have the Palm Beach International Airport be renamed, by a spectacular vote, The President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

"The Area is HOT, the Location is GREAT, and the Renovation will be SPECTACULAR. Thank you to all in Palm Beach for your Vote and your Confidence. This will soon be one of the Greatest and Most Spectacular Airports anywhere in the World!"

A Boeing 757 owned by The Trump Organization and nicknamed Trump Force One was the first plane to arrive at the airport under its new name, with Mr Trump's son, Eric Trump, on board.

"There is no person who has done more for Florida and our country, and no one more deserving of this incredible honour," Eric Trump posted on X.

"As a son, and someone who flies out of this airport nearly every day, I will forever be proud to see the initials 'DJT' on my boarding pass."

Earlier this year, Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation that enabled the change, which is expected to cost up to $5.5m (£4.1m) for new signs, branding and other updates.

The Trump family regularly uses the airport, located in West Palm Beach, when they visit the president's Mar-a-Lago home.

In January, a stretch of road from the airport to Mr Trump's estate was renamed Donald J Trump Boulevard.

'No one more deserving'

In Dandridge, Tennessee, on Thursday, Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, joined a number of other US officials at a ceremony to officially change the name of the I-40 Bridge in East Tennessee to the Donald J Trump Bridge.

Ahead of the ceremony, Mr Bessent said that "no one is more deserving" of the honour than Mr Trump, who received 82% of the vote in Jefferson County - where Dandridge is located - in the 2024 presidential election.

In April, the US state department said it would produce a limited number of commemorative passports bearing a portrait of Mr Trump as part of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

It said the passports would include Mr Trump's signature, with the words "United States of America" in bold gold print on the cover.
