The Knowing is a queer gothic novel set in the 19th century underworlds of New York and Manchester. It was inspired by real historical figures such as Maud Wagner, one of the first known female tattoo artists, Manchester gang the Scuttlers, and characters from PT Barnum's circus in the 1800s.

Emma Hinds is a queer writer and playwright living in Manchester whose work explores untold feminist narratives. In 2021, her play, Pure, was featured in the Turn On Festival at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre, where she was also the recipient of their Artist Development Grant. As an academic, she has written several non-fiction books, including Ineffable Love: Christian Themes in Good Omens
