Stonewall and Pride in London hold vigil for Berlin attack victims

London's LGBTQ+ community will gathered in Soho Square to remember those killed and injured in Saturday's attack at Berlin's Christopher Street Day celebrations.

Stonewall and Pride in London are held a vigil in Soho Square yesterday evening to remember those killed and injured in Saturday's attack at Berlin's Christopher Street Day celebrations, bringing together members of London's LGBTQ+ community to honour the victims and show solidarity with Berlin.

On the evening of 25 July, a van was driven into a crowd during Berlin Christopher Street Day, killing one woman and injuring 29 people, several critically. The Pride event, which had drawn hundreds of thousands of attendees, was called off shortly after the attack.

The perpetrator was fatally shot the next day by police when they attempted to arrest him. Thousands of people gathered for a community vigil in Berlin on Sunday at the Brandenburg Gate, just a few hundred metres from where the attack took place.

Stonewall chief executive Simon Blake OBE said the attack had targeted not only those attending the event but also the values that Pride represents. "The LGBTQ+ community and everyone that loves us are heartbroken at the attack on Berlin Pride. Our thoughts are with everyone that has been affected by this horrific event", he said.

The vigil featured speeches from Stonewall Chief exec, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Human Rights Lawyer & Social Welfare Activist Olivia Campbell-Cavendish.

Christopher Street Day is one of Europe's largest Pride celebrations, attracting hundreds of thousands of attendees each year. The event takes its name from New York City's Christopher Street, home to the Stonewall Inn, where the 1969 uprising helped spark the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Berlin's Christopher Street Day was first held in 1979.
