Jinkx Monsoon

Winner of Ru Paul's Drag Race season 5 Jinkx Monsoon chats to us ahead of her upcoming appearance at DragWorld in London!

Q: What has the reaction to your music been like from fans? It must have felt good to have it funded by the fans, right?

A: So far, the action has been sensational! We worked very hard on The Ginger Snapped and I feel very proud of how it turned out. Having it funded by the fans was really special- because it put the right amount of pressure on me to pour lots of work and love and passion into the project. The crowdsourcing paid for half of all the production costs for the album and the rest came out of my pocket- so it felt like me and the fanbase were creating the album together, and it was written with the fanbase in mind. I wanted to create an album that really drew upon the nostalgia that I share with my fanbase, and I think that was accomplished with the album. It was also really nice to feel like I had the support from my fanbase to continue to create my work.

Q: Where did the inspiration for your latest album, The Ginger Snapped, come from? What made you go down a 90s rock route?

A: The inspiration came from my early teen years, when I started doing drag, and I pulled inspiration form the music I used to listen to and perform to back then. In that, there is plenty of reference to early No Doubt, Amanda Palmer and The Dresden Dolls, and plenty of female rockers that empowered me as I began to explore my femininity with Drag.

Q: Are you planning on touring the album?

A: We wrote a cabaret show that features the music of the album and we will be touring it the fall through the UK, produced by the SOHO Theater. The show is a jazzy live therapy session onstage, where Jinkx embraces her mental health journey by de-stigmatizing the mental illness in a self-aware and authentic way. It's a very silly show while also being very personal. I can safely say it's our most entertaining show since The Vaudevillians, and the music of the album is the star of the show.
