England football manager Thomas Tuchel extends contract to 2028 Euros

England head coach Thomas Tuchel will lead the team through the 2028 Euros after signing a two-year contract extension.

The former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich boss said he was "very happy and proud to extend my time with England".

"It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup," he added.

The FA said the German had led the team to "record-breaking qualification" for this summer's tournament without conceding a goal and scoring 20.

However, England faced modest opposition in the form of Albania, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra. Playing away against the latter side - ranked 172 in the world - England only snuck past them 1-0.

The team also lost 3-1 to Senegal in a home friendly last summer.

Tuchel, whose support team will also stay on, had been on an 18-month contract after getting the job in January 2025.

"The agreements will ensure clarity and full focus on the pitch for the England squad at this summer's World Cup," said an FA statement.

The extension means Tuchel is now locked in to lead the team through qualification for Euro 2028, being co-hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

The 52-year-old said the tournament on home soil would be "very special".

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said there was "no better candidate in world football" than Tuchel.

"With his big-game experience, knowledge and passion, he gives the squad the very best chance for success - this summer and with the once-in-a generation Euro being hosted on these shores in two years' time," the FA boss added.

Tuchel was in charge when Chelsea beat Manchester City to win the Champions League final in 2021.

He was sacked 16 months later and went on to join Bayern Munich, winning the Bundesliga with the serial champions in the 22/23 season.

Tuchel left the team at the end of the 2024 season, a year earlier than planned, in what club bosses called a mutual agreement.

Some fans and pundits felt an English manager should have taken over from Sir Gareth Southgate, but the ease with which England qualified may have quietened some of that sentiment.

England will play World Cup warm-up games against New Zealand and Costa Rica on 6 and 10 June.

Their first game proper - against old foes Croatia - is on 17 June in Texas, followed by games against Ghana and Panama.

However, there's been criticism of FIFA over high ticket prices for the tournament, with many loyal fans feeling priced out of attending.
