Selling Out! - Ep 3: Laps, Lunges & Love | Brett Massey & Matt Ives / Selling Out!

Selling Out!

Friday, 6 November 2026 - 1 hour 6 minutes

Selling Out! is the podcast for LGBTQIA+ founders, leaders and creatives. Real conversations about building a life and a career on your own terms, straight jackets not included. 🏳️‍🌈Season 2, Episode 3 is about what happens when you stop hiding and go looking for your people, and it turns out they’re in a swimming pool and on the seafront in running shoes.Matt Ives (he/him, G) grew up in the Netherlands, where his first job was cleaning flower bulbs for pocket money. He came back to England for university, fell into quantity surveying more or less by accident, and spent over 25 years in a construction industry where coming out was not an option. Brighton changed everything. He joined Out to Swim, became its treasurer and is now chair of a club that has grown from a handful of regulars to almost 100 members. It now runs four sessions a week, offers learn-to-swim lessons, pays for members to train as coaches and has won a £10,000 Virgin grant to fund its Sunday sea swims. He and his husband have never lived under one roof, and it works brilliantly.Brett Massey (he/him, G) has had a career path best described as “no plan whatsoever”. He has gone from shoe menders and Essex market stalls to interior design, kitchen design, a modelling agency (paid to drink red wine at the Tate Modern, apparently) and now training as a counsellor. After a long, happy marriage he realised there was a side of himself he had never explored, and had his first gay kiss at 41. He compares it to putting his glasses on for the first time: suddenly everything was in focus. He joined Brighton Frontrunners just as lockdown hit, started with Zoom quizzes and gin, and is now co-chair of a club of around 120 members. It organises the Rainbow Run, which has raised over £26,000 for local queer charities. Two men who found their community late and are determined to make it easier for everyone who comes after them. This episode covers masking in male-dominated industries, the pull of the path of least resistance, why grassroots charities need our support, how trans and non-binary inclusion is changing sport (and why a “why not just add another category?” approach makes so much sense), and why real-life communities matter more than ever in a polarised, screen-obsessed world. It also has some very good bulb-cleaning stories.“We’re a social club with a running problem.”🎙️ Sponsored by Legends Brighton: legendsresortbrighton.com and Mortgage Medics: mortgage-medics.comVideo & Audio by Always Cinematic: AlwaysCinematic.comPowered by GoSucceed®Keywords / Tags: LGBTQIA+, queer community, queer sport, Out to Swim, Brighton Frontrunners, running, swimming, coming out, bisexual, trans inclusion, charity, Rainbow Run, Brighton, quantity surveying, kitchen design, counselling, podcast, Selling Out, GoSucceedSeason: 2 | Episode: 3Selling Out! is the podcast for LGBTQIA+ founders, leaders and creatives.
