Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor granted £302,000 in compensation after lease on Royal Lodge officially surrendered

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been granted £302,000 in compensation after his lease on his former Royal Lodge home in Windsor was officially surrendered, a Crown Estate spokesperson said.

The former prince left Royal Lodge earlier this year and is currently living on the Sandringham Estate.

It's understood Andrew has fully vacated the property and paid £1.8m for repair and restoration costs.

Andrew was entitled to compensation because, as per the terms of his lease, he surrendered it within the first 25 years.

A spokesperson for The Crown Estate added: "The lease for Royal Lodge has ended and our focus now is firmly on its future use and the opportunities to generate additional financial value for the nation from its early return."

The spokesperson said the property will now be marketed by two agents for its proposed future use.

Andrew moved out of Royal Lodge in February as part of a permanent move to Norfolk. He is now living in a house on Sandringham Estate.

He had lived at the 30-room mansion on the Windsor Estate for more than 20 years.

The move came after Buckingham Palace said last October that notice had been served for Andrew to surrender his lease at the Royal Lodge.

The palace also said that the King had initiated the "formal process" to remove Andrew's titles and honours.

It came after the US Department of Justice released files relating to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, which contained allegations made against Andrew by one of the billionaire's victims.

Andrew has always denied the allegations against him.

The Crown Estate spokesperson added on Friday that a compensation clause was added into the terms because of Andrew's payment of £7.5 million for refurbishment at the 30-room property at the start of his lease.

In December last year, the Crown Estate told MPs it was not believed Andrew would receive compensation for the early surrender of the lease once repair and restoration costs were taken into account.

It did add in a letter to the Commons Public Accounts Committee that "before this position can be fully validated, however, a full and thorough assessment must be undertaken post-occupation by an expert in dilapidation".
