A man has been charged and a woman has appeared in court amid an investigation into the attempted murder of two police officers in South Lanarkshire.

Police Scotland said the officers were carrying out inquiries at a property in Larkhall's Glen Avenue on the afternoon of 25 July when a van was "deliberately driven at them".

The two male officers, aged 41 and 43, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

They have since been discharged but currently remain unfit for duty.

Officers stopped a vehicle travelling on the M74 at J8 southbound on Tuesday evening and arrested and charged a 32-year-old man in connection with the incident.

The suspect was due to appear before Hamilton Sheriff Court on Wednesday, but the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) later confirmed this did not go ahead.

Sharon Pollock, 59, was arrested and charged earlier this month in connection with the case.

Her court hearing did proceed, where she made no plea to the single charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Pollock, of Larkhall, was granted bail ahead of her next court appearance, which is yet to be confirmed.

Detective Inspector Alister Thom said: "This act of violence left two officers, who were simply carrying out their duties, seriously injured.

"While they have since been discharged from hospital, they will remain unfit for duty for a prolonged period, and our thoughts continue to be with them at this time."

DI Thom said the extensive investigation has included detectives searching more than 100 properties throughout Lanarkshire and the Scottish Borders.

He added: "We've also reviewed a significant amount of CCTV footage as well as carrying out door-to-door enquiries.

"We'd like to thank members of the public for the information and support they provided during our investigation."
