Smoggie Queens is officially returning for series three

BBC sitcom Smoggie Queens has been recommissioned for a third series on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three.

The award-winning comedy, which is set and filmed in Middlesbrough, follows a gang of friends who are fiercely proud of their North Eastern town and their small pocket of the LGBTQ+ community.

Series three is set to bring more chaos, heart and mischief from the Boro, with Smoggie Queens staples Dickie, played by Phil Dunning, Mam, played by Mark Benton, Lucinda, played by Alexandra Mardell, Sal, played by Patsy Lowe, and Stewart, played by Elijah Young, all set to return.

Returning and additional cast are expected to be announced soon.

Gregor Sharp, Commissioning Editor for the BBC, said the show’s return is “testament to the brilliance of Phil Dunning and the entire creative team behind it.”

He added: “The show has carved out a unique place in British comedy with its unforgettable characters, razor-sharp humour and huge heart.

“The show continues to celebrate the people and spirit of Teesside with warmth, wit and authenticity, and we can’t wait to see what chaos the Smoggie Queens get themselves into next.”

Phil Dunning, who created, writes and stars in the series, said: “So buzzing to be recommissioned for series 3! Thank you BBC! Going to have a cheeky Bloody Mam to celebrate.”

Chris Jones, Series Producer at Hat Trick Productions, said: “I’m thrilled that the BBC is giving us another series.

Smoggie Queens is produced by Hat Trick Productions for BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.

The first and second series, which featured cameos from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK icon Michelle Visage and TV presenter Steph McGovern, are available to watch now on BBC iPlayer, alongside the digital spin-off series The Dickie Show.
