RuPaul headlines world record-breaking drag show with over 7,000 fans in Calgary

More than 7,400 people packed Cowboys Music Festival to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest drag show ever, with RuPaul headlining the historic celebration in Canada.

A record-breaking 7,423 people have set a new Guinness World Record for the largest drag show in history at Calgary's Cowboys Music Festival on 11 July, with the achievement officially confirmed this week.

Legendary drag performer RuPaul headlined the massive gathering at Cowboys Park arena in Alberta, along with Drag Race royalty Sasha Velour, Sasha Colby, Roxxxy Andrews and Coco Montrese, and local Canadian drag stars. The event, called "Drag Me to Cowboys", was hosted by Calgary performer Farrah Nuff.

The crowd erupted when RuPaul arrived to dance and DJ, later grabbing the microphone to lip-sync to Queen's "We Are the Champions" as the record was confirmed. Guinness World Records Adjudicator Tina Shi remotely reviewed the event and confirmed the attendance count through PatronScan.

The Cowboys Music Festival, which has run for 30 years, said it wanted to mark its anniversary with an official record count to prove the community was "more alive than ever". Organisers told Guinness World Records their goal was "to make this a title worth fighting for in the future, by expanding the size and impact of drag performances worldwide".

Calgary mayor Jeromy Farkas opened the show, telling the crowd: "No matter who you love, you belong here". Co-performer Karla Marx told the Calgary Herald the show's popularity demonstrates that the public is accepting of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Alberta, saying: "It shows that queerness is celebrated and welcome in Alberta".

The record comes as part of the annual Cowboys Music Festival, an 11-day event mixing country music and drag performance. The annual "Drag Me to Cowboys" show has grown into one of the festival's marquee events.
