Armed police to patrol Brighton Pride this weekend after Berlin attack

Sussex Police will deploy armed officers at Brighton Pride on Saturday and Sunday following a deadly attack on Berlin's Pride event that left one dead and 29 injured.

Armed police will be deployed across Brighton this weekend as the city hosts the UK's largest Pride festival, days after a deadly attack on Berlin's Pride event.

One person died and at least 29 others were injured when a van was driven into crowds at Berlin's Pride celebrations on Saturday, before the attacker stabbed people with a machete. The suspect was shot dead by police on Sunday after being on the run for nearly 24 hours.

Brighton and Hove Pride, which attracts over 300,000 people to the city, takes place on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August. Sussex Police confirmed uniformed officers, plain-clothed officers and specialist teams including armed police will patrol throughout the weekend.

Chief Superintendent James Collis said in a statement obtained by Gaydio: "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragic events at Pride celebrations in Berlin on Saturday. As we look ahead to Brighton and Hove Pride, I want to reassure those attending, as well as residents, businesses and visitors across the city, that their safety remains our top priority."

He added that the force has been working for months with event organisers, Brighton and Hove City Council and other partners on extensive planning. "We encourage everyone attending Pride to enjoy the celebrations, look out for one another, and report any concerns," he said.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the Berlin attack as "absolutely horrific" and said it demonstrated why Pride events remain necessary. He added that UK Pride events are "always well policed" and strike the right balance between public safety and celebration.

This year's Brighton Pride features headliners RAYE on Saturday and Diana Ross on Sunday at Preston Park. The festival is celebrating its 35th anniversary with the theme "The Power of Love".

Chief Superintendent Collis urged anyone attending to dial 999 in an emergency, or speak to officers or security if something doesn't feel right.
