Marilyn Monroe wasn't just a Hollywood superstar. She became a symbol of glamour, reinvention, resilience and unapologetic self-expression. Decades after her death, she continues to inspire artists, performers, designers and generations of LGBTQ+ people who see something of themselves in the woman behind the icon.

Whether you're a lifelong Marilyn fan, fascinated by classic Hollywood or simply looking for the perfect cultural weekend away, this is a prize worth dressing up for. Few stars have shaped popular culture like Marilyn Monroe.
Born Norma Jeane in 1926, she transformed herself into one of the most recognisable faces in history. Her image has been celebrated, recreated and reimagined for over 70 years, influencing everyone from Andy Warhol to today's drag performers, fashion designers and pop stars.
For many LGBTQ+ people, Marilyn's appeal goes beyond the platinum blonde hair and sparkling dresses. She represented transformation, performance and the power of creating your own identity. Her style, vulnerability and wit have inspired generations of queer artists, entertainers and audiences.
Her influence can still be seen across drag, camp culture, fashion, ballroom, theatre and pop music. It's why her legacy feels as relevant today as it did during Hollywood's golden age.
Take a trip through the lifetime of Marilyn Monroe with the National Portrait Gallery
Running now until 6th September 2026, "Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait" celebrates the star's centenary with one of the most ambitious exhibitions ever dedicated to her life and legacy.
Rather than simply celebrating a screen icon, the exhibition explores Marilyn as an active collaborator in creating her own image. She wasn't just photographed. She worked closely with photographers, directed shoots and insisted on approving images before they were published.
The exhibition brings together remarkable works by some of the biggest names in photography and art, including Andy Warhol, Pauline Boty, Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Eve Arnold, André de Dienes, Milton Greene and many more.

Among the highlights are previously unseen photographs taken just one day before Marilyn's death. The intimate images reveal moments of joy, reflection and quiet confidence, offering a rare glimpse beyond the Hollywood spotlight.
The National Portrait Gallery tells Britain's story through people. It's a place where art, history and culture come together in ways that feel welcoming and accessible, whether you're a regular gallery-goer or visiting for the first time.
