CIRCA Soho has announced it will close, telling followers it has made the “difficult decision” after celebrating its 15th Pride.
In an Instagram post shared last night, the venue said: “We’ve celebrated our 15th Pride, and are proud to have done so with all of you. With that, we’ve made the difficult decision to close CIRCA.”
The statement said CIRCA was created at a time when “Soho felt different”, describing it as a “proudly independent bar” built without “any certainty of success”.
The venue thanked customers for helping turn CIRCA into “not just somewhere to drop in on”, but a destination bar and a place for “lasting memories”.
CIRCA said the decision came as it approached the end of its lease.
Reacting to the announcement, Jeremy Joseph, who is known for owning nightclubs Heaven and G-A-Y, described it as “a sad day for our scene”.
“With the announcement of another independent Soho LGBTQ+ venue closing,” he wrote. “We might be in competition, but the more venues, the more variety & the more safe spaces the better the scene is.”
He added: “It gets tougher every day continuing to run a venue. Hospitality has no support. Political climate is so scary, Safe spaces are UR 2nd home. Protect Them.”
The venue thanked “everyone who has walked through our doors, supported us, worked with us, and made CIRCA what it became”.
It added: “You created something truly special and we’ll always be grateful for that.”
A final closing date was not included in the supplied statement.
