Mayor of London criticises "risk-averse" councils in LGBTQ+ nightlife venue row

Mayor of London says he wants greater control over licensing to help protect the capital's LGBTQ+ nightlife, accusing councils of being too cautious over late-night venues.

The Mayor of London has criticised what he describes as "risk-averse" councils as he renewed calls for City Hall to be given greater control over licensing powers to help protect the capital's LGBTQ+ nightlife.

Speaking to Gaydio at Pride in London this past weekend, Sadiq Khan said he is lobbying central government to transfer licensing powers to his office, arguing the current system is contributing to the closure of venues across the capital.

"We've got these councils who allow objections about staying open late or alfresco dining, and the council becomes risk-averse," Khan said.

He added: "I think that'll make a big difference, taking over licensing. We're also trying to persuade councils to recognise the importance of these venues."

Khan made the comments while discussing the challenges facing London's LGBTQ+ nightlife, with concerns continuing over the loss of venues and restrictions on the night-time economy.

Speaking to Gaydio's Luis Wyatt during the annual Pride in London celebrations, which saw more than 35,000 people take part in the march through the city, Khan also expressed his support for former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham's bid to become the next Prime Minister.

Reflecting on their long-standing working relationship, Khan said: "I've known Andy for over 20 years. It's really important to see the difference in Manchester under Andy's leadership for the LGBTQI+ community."

He also praised Burnham's record as an ally, telling Gaydio listeners: "I want to reassure your listeners that Andy's the best possible ally this community can have."

Khan added that he believes Burnham would do "a great job representing all communities who feel like they're marginalised."
