Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is receiving medical care and is able to communicate after being hospitalised on Tuesday following a TikTok livestream that prompted emergency calls to his Miami home.
The family of celebrity blogger Perez Hilton have confirmed he is able to communicate after being hospitalised following a distressing incident on TikTok on Tuesday night.
In a second statement posted to Hilton's website yesterday, his family said they had been able to confirm "that Perez is able to communicate, which has given our family hope." The 48-year-old was taken to a Miami hospital on Tuesday after emergency services were called to his home.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office responded to multiple calls about someone livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media, though they did not name Hilton in their statement. Deputies used crisis intervention techniques before Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported him to hospital for medical evaluation.
TikTok has since removed the content and banned the account. A spokesperson for the platform told Deadline that whilst automated systems flagged the livestream within minutes, a "moderator error" caused a delay in its removal. The company said it alerted law enforcement and closed several subsequent streams within 90 seconds.
Hilton's family thanked supporters for their "overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers" in their initial statement on Wednesday. They asked for privacy and said their focus is on his wellbeing and recovery.
The blogger, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, rose to prominence in the 2000s with his celebrity gossip website. He has three children and recently relocated from Las Vegas to Miami.
Earlier this year, Hilton spent 21 days in hospital battling severe sepsis caused by a perforated ulcer. He then required emergency surgery in April for a deep vein thrombosis in his leg.
